Cagayan De Oro City, Philippines- a continuing effort to dismantle the remnants of communist insurgency in Northern Mindanao, five members of the New People's Army (NPA) voluntarily surrendered to government forces during a joint operation in Bukidnon, military officials confirmed.

The operation was conducted by the 1st Special Forces Battalion (1SFBn) under the 4th Infantry “Diamond” Division (4ID) of the Philippine Army, in coordination with the Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB) Region 10 of the Philippine National Police.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Emilio T. Bautista, Commanding Officer of the 1SFBn, the surrenderers included a liaison and communications officer, as well as regular fighters. They turned over two high-powered firearms one M16 rifle and one M203 grenade launcher during their surrender.

The former rebels cited extreme fatigue, persistent hunger, and fear for their safety as key reasons for abandoning the armed struggle. They expressed their desire to start anew as the military continues to intensify its operations in the region, targeting remaining NPA elements.

Major General Michele B. Anayron Jr., Commander of the 4ID, welcomed the development and emphasized the government’s commitment to ending the local communist armed conflict through both military pressure and reintegration efforts.

“We acknowledge the bravery of these surrenderers to lay down their arms and work hand in hand with us to end insurgency,” said Maj. Gen. Anayron. “This is a positive step toward lasting peace. However, we remain resolute in pursuing those who continue to disrupt our peace-loving communities.”

He reiterated that the military will not waver in its mission to neutralize remaining NPA fighters and ensure the safety and stability of Northern Mindanao.

This latest surrender highlights the growing success of the government’s whole-of-nation approach, which combines security operations with livelihood support and reintegration programs aimed at transforming former rebels into productive members of society.
