Zambosurian Teen Para-Athlete Ivar Semense Wins Gold at Palarong Pambansa 2025

Sixteen years old, Jezreel Ivar Cabilan Semense has captured the admiration of his community and the entire Region IX after winning two gold medals and one silver at the 2025 Palarong Pambansa. The young para-athlete from Purok 8, Barangay Sumalig, Tambulig brought honor not only to his school, Sumalig National High School, but also to his town and the region.

Ivar’s swimming journey began not in a professional facility, but in the coastal waters near his home. Growing up by the sea, he and his siblings learned to swim from a young age, turning play into passion. His mother, Glice Arante Cabilan Semense, herself a former Palarong Pambansa qualifier, guided and encouraged him to develop his talent early on. By 2019, he was already competing in regional swimming competitions.

However, Ivar’s promising path faced a major challenge in 2021 when he was diagnosed with fibrosarcoma, a malignant tumor in his right leg. After trying non-surgical treatments, doctors advised immediate amputation, which was successfully performed in 2022. Despite this life-altering setback, Ivar’s determination never wavered.

With the support of his family and coach Edlie Tortogo, Ivar resumed his education and returned to competitive swimming. His unwavering dedication, discipline, and rigorous training helped him progress from district-level competitions to the national meet, ultimately achieving gold and silver medals at the Palarong Pambansa.

“Ivar’s strength is not just physical; it’s his mindset and determination that make him a champion,” said Coach Tortogo. “He is a true inspiration to young athletes everywhere.”

Beyond his personal achievements, Ivar’s story is a powerful testament to resilience. His journey demonstrates that limitations whether physical or otherwise do not define one’s potential. His success has inspired his peers, schoolmates, and community, showing that perseverance and hard work can overcome even the toughest obstacles.

Regional education and sports officials have lauded his accomplishment. Among those who supported Ivar’s journey were DepEd Region IX Director Dr. Ruth L. Fuentes, Schools Division Superintendent Ma. Judelyn J. Ramos, former and current Public Schools District Supervisors, School Principal Josefel A. Forniz, and his coaching team. His family’s unwavering encouragement has been a key factor in his success.

Ivar Semense continues to train and prepare for upcoming para-games competitions, embodying the motto that true excellence knows no limits. His story serves as a reminder that with courage, determination, and support, even the most daunting challenges can be turned into remarkable achievements.

Congratulations, Ivar Semense, Para Exceptional Athlete Awardee for the Gawad ng Pagkilala sa Larangan ng Isports 2025. Your remarkable courage and outstanding performance bring pride and inspiration to the entire region.
