Another milestone has been achieved for environmental conservation in Zamboanga Sibugay as the Sibugay Wetland Nature Reserve was officially designated as an East Asian–Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP) Flyway Network Site (EAAF 160), highlighting its critical role as a habitat for migratory birds in the region.

The recognition was formally conferred on November 10 during the 12th EAAFP Meeting of Parties held in Cebu City, Philippines. This follows the earlier international declaration of the wetlands as a Ramsar Site, acknowledged as a Wetland of International Importance — the largest Ramsar site in the Philippines and one of only ten across the country.

With these two prestigious distinctions, the Sibugay Wetland Nature Reserve now stands as a globally significant sanctuary for migratory birds while serving as a vital ecological asset for climate resilience and biodiversity conservation.

Governor Ann Hofer extended her heartfelt congratulations to all Sibugaynons, commending their unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship that made these achievements possible. She also recognized the tireless efforts of PENRO Zamboanga Sibugay and other partners who continue to safeguard and manage this invaluable natural heritage.

“This recognition is not just a pride for our province but a testament to our shared responsibility to protect our environment,” Governor Ann said.

With global and national acknowledgments now in place, Zamboanga Sibugay continues to set a model for sustainable environmental management and biodiversity protection in the Philippines.
