SAN MIGUEL, ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR — The Senate has officially approved on third and final reading House Bill No. 10885, which seeks to establish a new district hospital in the municipality of San Miguel, Zamboanga del Sur. The soon-to-rise facility will be known as the Zamboanga del Sur Second District Hospital, a long-awaited development that aims to address the growing need for accessible and quality healthcare in the province’s second district.

The measure, originally filed by 2nd District Representative Victoria Yu on November 14, 2022, found a strong champion in the Senate through Senator Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go, who stood as the principal sponsor of the bill. Known for his consistent advocacy for healthcare reforms and dubbed “Mr. Malasakit,” Senator Go lauded the passage of the bill as a critical step toward ensuring that residents of Zamboanga del Sur will no longer have to travel far for basic and emergency medical care.

“This hospital will bring healthcare closer to the people. It is a reflection of our commitment to serve the underserved and reach the unreached,” said Senator Go during his sponsorship speech.

A groundbreaking ceremony was already held on October 14, 2023, marking the official commencement of the project. The event drew in local leaders, health officials, and residents, celebrating what many believe will be a game-changer in the region’s public health landscape.

Construction of the hospital is currently underway, with an initial allocation of ₱70 million from the national government. Local officials expressed gratitude for the swift action taken by both chambers of Congress, noting that the new district hospital is expected to reduce the patient load in existing medical facilities in Pagadian City and nearby areas.

Once completed, the Zamboanga del Sur Second District Hospital is expected to offer a range of medical services, including outpatient care, emergency services, maternity and pediatric care, laboratory and diagnostic support, and minor surgeries. It is also anticipated to create employment opportunities for local healthcare professionals and support staff.

The final passage of the bill now paves the way for the Department of Health (DOH) and other concerned agencies to finalize operational plans, staffing, and facility upgrades in preparation for the hospital’s opening.

For the people of San Miguel and nearby municipalities, this development is more than just the construction of a building it is a symbol of hope and progress.

“We’ve waited a long time for this. It’s finally happening,” said a resident during the groundbreaking ceremony.

As the bill awaits the President’s signature, anticipation continues to build across Zamboanga del Sur for what could be one of the most impactful healthcare infrastructure projects in the province’s recent history.
