Your Life Is Important: A Faith-Centered Appeal in Suicide Awareness Month

September is Mental Health Awareness Month, and as we mark World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, we must confront an alarming reality: suicide cases are rising in the Philippines. In Zamboanga del Sur, at least ten people both young and adult have recently taken their lives due to depression, financial struggles, and emotional despair. Nationally, the PNP recorded nearly 2,000 suicide deaths in the first half of 2025, while 2020 saw 3,529 deaths, a 25 percent surge compared to 2019. Globally, more than 700,000 lives are lost to suicide each year. These are not just numbers they are lives, families, and futures cut short.

Awareness campaigns and symposiums have been conducted nationwide, but let us be honest: awareness alone is not enough. Knowledge without hope is powerless. People in despair need more than statistics; they need assurance, purpose, and faith. We must remind them: "Your Life is Important,  as long as you live God is not done Writing your story, God is Testing your Faith Hold on to him! God Loves you and This Generation Needs God!"

Faith gives meaning when hopelessness feels overwhelming. Churches and faith communities can provide support, healing, and a sense of belonging. Yes, we need hotlines, counseling, and policies like the Mental Health Act fully implemented but without faith in God’s love, these efforts will fall short of giving true hope.

This month, let us go beyond slogans. Check on your loved ones. Listen with compassion. Encourage the use of crisis hotlines such as the NCMH line (1553, 0917-899-8727, 0966-351-4518) and HOPELINE (2919, 02-805-HOPE). And most importantly, let us speak words of life. Symposiums and awareness drives will remain hollow unless we inject God’s Word into the hearts of the depressed and hopeless.

To anyone struggling: your life matters, your story is not over, and God is not done with you. This September and beyond, let us be vigilant, compassionate, and faith-driven. Because saving lives is not just about awareness it is about action, love, and God’s hope.
