Marantao, Lanao del Sur — A two-year-old child was safely rescued from a hostage situation on Monday morning, following a swift and coordinated response by police and local officials in Barangay Maul Ilian, Marantao.

According to initial reports, authorities received a distress call at approximately 11:35 a.m. from a concerned citizen alerting them to a man holding a toddler hostage with a bolo. The suspect, identified only by the alias “Itlog,” is a jobless resident of the area reportedly known for unstable behavior.

Within minutes, personnel from the Marantao Municipal Police Station (MPS), led by Police Major Bobby Mario E. Egera, arrived at the scene and immediately began negotiating with the armed suspect.

Support quickly arrived from higher-ranking officials including Police Colonel Caezar P. Cabuhat, Provincial Director of the Lanao del Sur Police Provincial Office (LDSPPO); Police Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Jamal O. Adiong, Chief of the Provincial Intelligence Unit (PIU); Municipal Mayor Hon. Akira I. Alonto; and Barangay Chairman Hon. Mohammad Jamal Tanggote.

For nearly two tense hours, authorities worked to calm the suspect and prevent harm to the child. The standoff ended safely when the suspect lowered his bolo, giving police the opportunity to subdue and arrest him without further incident.

The child, who sustained minor graze wounds on the neck, was immediately brought to Amai Pakpak Medical Center (APMC) for treatment and is now reported to be in stable condition.

The suspect is currently in custody at Marantao MPS. He is facing multiple charges, including violations of Batas Pambansa Blg. 6 (Illegal Possession of Deadly Weapon), Alarm and Scandal, and Republic Act 9262, also known as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act.

In a statement, Provincial Director PCOL Cabuhat praised the rapid and composed actions of the Marantao police. “I commend the swift and courageous response of our Marantao police led by PMAJ Egera. Their professionalism and dedication ensured the safe rescue of the child. Let this serve as a reminder that the PNP will always stand ready to protect the most vulnerable,” he said.

The investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances and motive behind the incident.
