STRONG EARTHQUAKE HITS DRAKE PASSAGE; NO TSUNAMI THREAT TO THE PHILIPPINES

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) has assured the public that there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines following a magnitude 7.6 earthquake that struck the Drake Passage at around 4:29 a.m. today.

In its advisory, PHIVOLCS explained that tsunami threats typically occur only when the earthquake’s epicenter is within 1,000 kilometers of a coastal area, which is not the case for this event.

The quake occurred in the Drake Passage a body of water located between Cape Horn, Chile, and the southern tip of mainland South America, extending toward the South Shetland Islands near Antarctica.

PHIVOLCS added that the tremor was tectonic in origin and had a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. Based on available data, the epicenter was traced to the southwestern part of the Drake Passage.
