Zamboanga Del Sur First District Representative Joseph Kim Yu has called for the strict enforcement and stronger public recognition of Republic Act No. 10054, also known as the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009, during his recent privilege speech at the House of Representatives.

Rep. Yu stressed that the full implementation of the law is crucial to reducing road accidents and saving lives, particularly in areas where motorcycles are the primary mode of transportation. He cited the alarming number of motorcycle-related injuries and fatalities in the Zamboanga Peninsula particularly in the City of Pagadian, noting that many could have been prevented with proper helmet use.

“The law is clear: wearing standard protective motorcycle helmets is not just for compliance it is for the safety of every rider and passenger,” Yu said. He urged the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Land Transportation Office (LTO), and local government units to intensify information campaigns, reminding motorists that helmets must meet the safety standards set by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Rep. Yu also called for fairness in the application of the law, warning against inconsistent implementation. “Every act of selective enforcement undermines the integrity of our laws and the trust of our constituents,” he emphasized.

Yu further committed to working with stakeholders to ensure that motorcycle riders in the 1st District and across the country are informed, equipped, and protected on the road.
