PNP Says New Year 2026 Celebrations More Peaceful Than Last Year
The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported a generally more peaceful celebration in welcoming 2026, compared to the previous year, according to Acting PNP Chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. Nartatez attributed the improved situation to the widespread implementation of community fireworks displays organized by various local government units (LGUs), as well as the enforcement of local ordinances banning firecrackers. These measures, he said, encouraged residents to attend organized displays instead of purchasing and using firecrackers themselves. Based on initial data gathered from PNP Regional Offices nationwide, the number of firecracker-related injuries was recorded at just over 200 cases. However, Nartatez noted that the figure may still increase as validation of other reported incidents is ongoing. Despite this, the acting PNP chief emphasized that air quality noticeably improved during the New Year celebration, with less smog and air pollution observed compared to previous years. The PNP said it will continue to evaluate reports to ensure accurate documentation of incidents related to the holiday celebrations. Philippine People's Press | In Truth We Prevail
