Seventeen individuals were arrested by the Philippine National Police (PNP) following a violent incident that erupted Sunday afternoon at the corner of Ayala and Romualdez Streets in Mendiola, Manila.

According to the PNP, the disturbance involved stone-throwing and the burning of a trailer truck during a protest attended by an estimated 300 to 400 individuals.

Firefighters and police immediately responded to contain the blaze and restore order in the area. Those apprehended are now under the custody of the Manila Police District and are set to face appropriate charges.

In a statement, the PNP reiterated its respect for the public’s right to peaceful assembly but urged demonstrators to maintain order and refrain from violent acts.

The police also assured the public that while maximum tolerance will continue to be observed during demonstrations, authorities will not allow any acts of violence or disturbance to go unpunished.
