MANILA — The Philippines and Singapore on Wednesday reaffirmed their longstanding partnership by committing to stronger collaboration in renewable energy, healthcare, digital innovation, and regional leadership within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

This came after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. welcomed Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in Malacañang for his inaugural state visit to the country. The visit coincides with the celebration of 56 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

“Prime Minister Wong’s visit is a testament to the enduring friendship between our countries,” President Marcos said in a joint press statement. “It reflects the strong camaraderie between Filipinos and Singaporeans.”

Stronger Economic and Green Energy Partnerships

Singapore remains one of the Philippines’ top economic partners, ranking eighth in trade for 2024 and continuing to be a leading source of foreign direct investments. The city-state is also home to approximately 220,000 Filipinos, many of whom are employed in healthcare and domestic services.

The two leaders agreed to advance cooperation in the renewable energy sector, including a forthcoming implementing agreement on a carbon credits mechanism aligned with the Paris Agreement. This initiative aims to attract green investments and promote sustainable livelihoods.

“We are committed to diversifying our energy sources, and Singapore is an indispensable partner in realizing this goal,” Marcos said, urging more Singaporean investments in solar, wind, and other renewable projects.

Prime Minister Wong echoed the sentiment, citing interest from Singaporean firms in Philippine energy ventures and emphasizing collaboration through the ASEAN Power Grid.

Health Cooperation and Support for Filipino Workers

President Marcos also highlighted the development of a bilateral healthcare agreement that will facilitate exchanges, training, and expanded support for Filipino medical professionals working in Singapore.

“We are working toward formalizing a health cooperation deal that will benefit both countries, particularly our health workers,” he said.

Wong praised the contribution of Filipino frontliners during the COVID-19 pandemic and shared that Singapore is creating reintegration and upskilling programs for healthcare professionals.

Commitment to ASEAN and Digital Governance

Looking ahead to the Philippines’ chairmanship of ASEAN in 2026, both leaders pledged deeper coordination on regional priorities such as economic integration, multilateralism, and digital governance.

Wong reiterated Singapore’s backing of the Philippines’ digital transformation initiatives, particularly through leadership training provided by the National University of Singapore to the Civil Service Commission.

“We discussed how to make ASEAN stronger and more resilient, guided by our mutual belief in free trade and multilateral cooperation,” Marcos said.

A Model Partnership

President Marcos expressed gratitude for Singapore’s support in times of crisis, including disaster relief efforts during the October 2024 typhoon and contributions to wildlife conservation, notably involving the Philippine Eagle.

He also congratulated Singapore on its upcoming 60th independence anniversary in August.

“Singapore’s transformation into one of the world’s most admired nations is a milestone worth celebrating and for the Philippines, a journey worth learning from,” Marcos said.

Prime Minister Wong’s state visit marks a renewed chapter in PH-SG relations, anchored on shared goals of sustainability, innovation, and inclusive growth.
