Metro Manila — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is calling for a more measured and inclusive approach to regulating online gambling, stressing that the core issue lies not in the activity itself, but in its adverse social consequences particularly gambling addiction and its impact on Filipino youth.

In the latest episode of his BBM Podcast, the President acknowledged rising public concern from lawmakers, religious leaders, and advocacy groups, urging government action amid reports of financial distress and addiction among vulnerable sectors.

“We still have to finalize our policy direction on online gambling,” Marcos said, noting that the government's ongoing consultations aim to strike a balance between regulation and public protection.

He revealed that a multi-sectoral conference is already in motion, involving representatives from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), clergy, parents’ associations, and regulatory agencies.

“The victims are often the youth,” the President emphasized. “That’s why we are involving the Church, parents, and regulators to craft a policy that’s grounded in social responsibility.”

While acknowledging calls for a total ban, Marcos cautioned against knee-jerk reactions, saying prohibition may drive the activity underground and out of reach of regulatory oversight.

“The moment you outlaw it entirely, it just goes underground. Then we lose all control,” he explained.

Citing the controversy surrounding the now-defunct Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), Marcos clarified that the existence of regulated gambling entities wasn't the primary issue it was the illegal practices associated with them, such as human trafficking and fraud.

“The same goes for online gambling,” he added. “Our concern isn’t the platform, but the social effects addiction, especially among minors, and financial ruin among the vulnerable.”

The President assured the public that the administration’s priority is to shield families and young Filipinos from the harmful effects of gambling, with a comprehensive national framework currently being developed through broad consultations.
