Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., who officially took his oath as the new chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), has been directed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to submit a “comprehensive citizen security strategy” within one month.

In a statement released Tuesday, August 26, 2025, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said the President’s directive emphasizes the need to boost police visibility nationwide and ensure that Filipinos feel secure in their communities.

“The Filipinos must be safe,” the DILG underscored, noting that President Marcos wants the PNP’s mission to remain consistent and focused on citizen protection.

Nartatez succeeds General Nicolas Torre III, who was recently relieved from his post. He earlier vowed to continue the PNP’s programs on anti-criminality, the fight against illegal drugs, and improved police response.
