Marcos Signs PHP6.793-Trillion 2026 National Budget, Vetoes Unprogrammed Items

Manila, Philippines — January 5, 2026

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday signed into law the PHP6.793-trillion national budget for 2026, formally enacting Republic Act No. 12314, also known as the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of 2026. The President, however, vetoed several unprogrammed appropriations to reinforce fiscal discipline and ensure prudent government spending.

Under the newly enacted budget, the education sector received the largest allocation at PHP1.345 trillion, underscoring the administration’s commitment to strengthening basic and higher education, improving school facilities, and enhancing learning outcomes nationwide.

Healthcare was allotted a record PHP448.125 billion, marking the highest budget ever for the sector. The funding is intended to support hospital modernization, universal health care programs, disease prevention initiatives, and improved access to medical services for Filipinos.

The agriculture sector was allocated PHP297.102 billion, aimed at boosting food production, supporting farmers and fisherfolk, improving irrigation systems, and enhancing food security amid global economic and climate challenges.

According to the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), President Marcos vetoed several unprogrammed items in the 2026 budget, citing the need to avoid spending measures without clear and sustainable funding sources. The move, the DBM said, reflects the administration’s push for responsible fiscal management while prioritizing essential government programs.

The 2026 national budget is expected to play a crucial role in sustaining economic growth, strengthening public services, and advancing the government’s long-term development goals.
