Liga ng mga Barangay Seeks Dismissal of Petition Opposing Postponed Elections

The Supreme Court has received a motion from the League of Barangays of the Philippines (Liga ng mga Barangay) urging the dismissal of a petition challenging the postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

In its filing, the League cited the recently enacted Republic Act 12232, signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., which officially moves the elections to November 2026. The law also provides that elected Barangay and SK officials will serve a four-year term.

The petition against the postponement was filed by election lawyer Atty. Romulo Macalintal, who claimed that there is insufficient legal basis for delaying the elections.

The League, which represents more than 40,000 barangays nationwide, emphasized that Congress has the authority to extend the term of local officials.

“Recognizing the law ensures orderly elections while upholding the legislative power of Congress over local governance,” the League said.

The Supreme Court has not yet scheduled deliberations on the petition.
