Lacson Considers Stepping Down as Blue Ribbon Chair; Flood Control Probe Postponed Amid Senate Strain

MANILA — Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo “Ping” Lacson is reportedly weighing the possibility of resigning as chair of the powerful Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, following mounting frustration among some senators over his leadership in recent high-profile investigations.

“If my colleagues especially those in the majority have lost confidence in me, then perhaps stepping down is an option,” Lacson said, acknowledging the growing division within the chamber. His statement comes as internal tensions continue to unsettle the Senate, with several key inquiries still unresolved.

The committee’s scheduled hearing on alleged irregularities in flood control projects has been temporarily suspended. Lacson cited the absence of crucial documents from the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) as among the reasons for the delay. He also noted that ongoing budget deliberations and Commission on Appointments sessions have taken priority.

The next phase of the inquiry is expected to call former House Speaker Martin Romualdez and resigned Representative Zaldy Co to testify, drawing significant public interest and political scrutiny.

Lacson’s possible resignation, coupled with the postponed probe, has intensified speculation about internal realignments in the Senate and raised questions.
