Heavy Rainfall Warning Raised in Parts of Mindanao Due to ITCZ; Flooding and Landslides Possible

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued Heavy Rainfall Warning No. 2 on Saturday evening, May 17, 2025, due to the prevailing Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) affecting several areas across Mindanao.

As of 8:20 PM, a Yellow Warning Level is in effect for Davao Oriental, particularly in the municipalities of Tarragona, Manay, and Caraga, where flooding is possible in low-lying areas and landslides may occur in mountainous terrain.

Moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall is currently being experienced in several other provinces, which may persist for the next 2 to 3 hours. These include parts of Sarangani (Malungon, Alabel), Davao Oriental (Governor Generoso, San Isidro, Mati City, Banaybanay, Lupon, Baganga, Cateel, Boston), Surigao del Sur (Hinatuan, Bislig City, Lingig), Agusan del Sur (Trento, Bunawan, Rosario), Surigao del Norte, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Misamis Occidental, Zamboanga Sibugay, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao del Norte and del Sur, North Cotabato, Cotabato City, Davao City, Dinagat Islands, and Lanao del Norte (Kolambugan, Maigo).

Meanwhile, light to moderate rains are expected over the provinces of Davao del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Davao Occidental, South Cotabato, Sarangani, Zamboanga City, Basilan, Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, and Davao de Oro within the next 1 to 2 hours.

PAGASA warns that low-lying areas are at risk of flooding, and mountainous regions may experience landslides, particularly in areas already saturated by previous rains.

Residents and local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (DRRMOs) are advised to remain vigilant and to closely monitor weather advisories. The public is urged to prepare for possible evacuation and to follow local government instructions should the situation worsen.

The next heavy rainfall warning update is scheduled to be issued by PAGASA at 11:00 PM today.
