President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has officially signed into law Republic Act No. 12206, paving the way for the establishment of the Zamboanga del Sur First District Hospital in the municipality of Ramon Magsaysay.

The landmark legislation seeks to enhance access to quality healthcare services in the province, particularly in the first congressional district, which has long awaited its own government-run hospital. This development comes alongside the ongoing construction of the Second District Hospital in the municipality of San Miguel, signaling significant strides in improving the province’s healthcare infrastructure.

RA 12206 was principally authored and sponsored by Zamboanga del Sur First District Representative and now Governor-elect Divina Grace C. Yu, with strong support from Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, Chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography.

In a statement, local officials expressed gratitude for the passage of the law. "This is a historic milestone for our district. For the first time, residents of the First District will have easier access to public hospital services without traveling far," said Cong. Yu. She also acknowledged the invaluable support of Senator Go, a longtime advocate of accessible healthcare.

The new district hospital is expected to decongest existing medical facilities in neighboring towns and cities while providing more efficient and affordable health services to thousands of residents.

The Department of Health (DOH) is expected to oversee the planning, funding, and implementation of the hospital’s infrastructure and staffing requirements in coordination with local government units.

With this new development, Zamboanga del Sur strengthens its commitment to prioritize health and well-being as a fundamental right of every citizen.
