ZAMBOANGA PENINSULA — Nearly 9,000 volunteers took part in simultaneous coastal cleanups across 20 sites in the region on September 20, led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) IX in observance of the 2025 International Coastal Cleanup (ICC).

A total of 3,609 sacks of trash weighing 27,421 kilograms were collected, including plastics, PET bottles, tires, and other debris. The figure surpassed last year’s haul of 26,841 kilograms from 22 sites.

DENR IX stressed that the ICC is not just a one-day event but a call for sustainable waste management practices. This year’s theme, “Clean Seas Against the Climate Crisis,” highlights the vital role of marine ecosystems in climate resilience and coastal prprotection.
