COMELEC to Decide on Successor to Duterte Youth Party-list Seats in Congress

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) en banc is set to deliberate on who will fill the three vacant seats in the House of Representatives originally allotted to the Duterte Youth Party-list.

This follows the COMELEC en banc’s earlier cancellation of the group’s registration due to procedural deficiencies, specifically its failure to comply with the required publication and hearing processes necessary for party-list accreditation.

COMELEC Chairman George Erwin Garcia announced that the en banc will convene on Wednesday to discuss the matter. He explained that both the Law Department and the Supervisory Committee of COMELEC must first assess the potential successors, should the cancellation order become final and executory. The National Board of Canvassers can only proclaim replacements once this condition is met.

Garcia emphasized, however, that the implementation of the cancellation is still subject to the final ruling of the Supreme Court, in deference to its authority.

Despite this, he expressed confidence that the High Court will uphold the decision of the COMELEC.
