COA QUESTIONS SSS PURCHASE OF OVER 143,000 TISSUE ROLLS WORTH P13.2M

The Commission on Audit (COA) has flagged the Social Security System (SSS) for purchasing 143,424 rolls of tissue paper worth P13.195 million in 2024.

COA noted that the quantity procured exceeded the agency’s two-month supply requirement, raising concerns that the excess could not be properly stored within SSS facilities.

The audit also revealed missing documentation, including the absence of a proper memorandum of understanding, as well as lapses in the payment of SSS funeral benefits, which reportedly reached P3 million.

According to the COA report, the same amount of tissue could have instead been used to benefit 2,000 SSS pensioners or cover funeral benefits for 650 deceased members.

The findings highlight ongoing concerns about procurement practices and resource allocation within the SSS, emphasizing the need for stricter oversight.
