BIR Issues Letters of Authority to Flood Control Contractors Amid Senate Probe

As the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee continues its hearings on the alleged anomalous flood control projects, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has intensified its own investigation into the contractors involved.

BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui personally led the issuance of Letters of Authority (LOA) to several flood control contractors who attended the Senate inquiry.

According to Commissioner Lumagui, the LOAs were issued under the agency’s Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) program, which seeks to uncover irregularities and ensure compliance with tax obligations in connection with the so-called “ghost” flood control projects.

The BIR chief stressed that the bureau remains fully committed to cooperating with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and the Senate to uncover the truth behind the controversy, noting that taxpayer money is at stake.

Earlier, the BIR announced that it would conduct comprehensive tax fraud audits to determine whether the contractors are legitimate and compliant with their tax duties.

The bureau also urged the public to report any contractors suspected of evading taxes by sending information directly to commissioner@bir.gov.ph
