ZAMBOANGA CITY — Twelve municipalities in Zamboanga del Sur have been honored by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for integrating the Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS) into their disaster preparedness strategies. The recognition was given during the event “A Night of Honor and Fellowship” on September 22, 2025, at Palacio Del Sur, Zamboanga City.

The awardees include the towns of Aurora, Molave, Ramon Magsaysay, Sominot, Dimataling, Dinas, Dumalinao, Guipos, Kumalarang, Lakewood, Pitogo, and Tabina. Local chief executives and their Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) officers personally received the commendation.

REDAS, developed in 2002 by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) under a DOST-funded project, is a software designed to simulate the impacts of earthquakes. It can generate hazard scenarios such as ground shaking, liquefaction, landslides, and tsunamis, and provides estimates of possible structural damage, casualties, and economic losses.

By adopting REDAS, these LGUs now have access to a scientific tool that can guide planning and decision-making in the face of seismic risks. DOST officials said the move marks a significant step in strengthening local resilience and ensuring safer communities in Zamboanga del Sur.
